Subject: Supermarket Russian Roulette -- Eat at Your Own Risk

If you haven't enjoyed the video of rodents running wild at a KFC/ Taco Bell in Greenwich Village, maybe you saw undercover NBC news coverage of produce suppliers for New York's most upscale restaurants -- hidden camera footage revealed human waste leaking from sewers onto open crates of fruits and vegetables, workers urinating close to fine cuts of meat, no one ever washing their hands when emerging from the toilet, etc. (And the local Health Department officials knew about this but winked and turned a blind eye -- until the media exposure triggered a political backlash.) I don't know how bad it is elsewhere in the United States, but here in San Francisco we gamble: I get mild food poisoning from about 1 out of every 5 delivery orders, and last month the wife had to be taken in an ambulance to the emergency room after ordering a pizza from an Italian restaurant.

Maybe it's heretical to point this out but, during the last decade, America's food-supply chain --from growing to supplying to food preparation-- has evolved into a monopoly of undocumented Mexican immigrants, often caught on hidden camera spitting on (or worse) the food that we "Yanquis" eat.

We don't need to fear "terrorists" targeting our food supply. "Montezuma's revenge" is LITERAL.

Another food product
pulled from store shelves

CORPUS CHRISTI - Another popular food item is now the focus of the nationwide recall. Once again there's more empty space tonight on the shelves at local H-E-B's. This time, it's a well known brand of chicken breast strips, and it follows three other recalls that have left some shoppers confused and concerned.

The latest recall involves chicken breast strips made by Oscar Mayer and Louis Rich. The concern is over listeriosis, a food poisoning that can lead to flu-like symptoms. Traces of the bacteria were found in a package made at a plant in South Carolina.

Just like with Peter Pan Peanut Butter, H-E-B stores have pulled the effected products off the shelves. The Peter Pan recall has now lead to salmonella reports in 41 states including Texas.

The jars included in the recall begin with "2111" on the lid, and they've turned up in cabinets all over the Coastal Bend.

There is also a recall of Earth's Best Organic Apple Barley Baby Food because of concerns of botulism.

A recall of certain Dole cantaloupes because certain cartons were found with salmonella also. But neither the bad baby food nor the tainted cantaloupes are carried at local stores, allowing shoppers to continue buying at least most of the items they're used too buying.

Here what consumers need to know about the chicken breast strip recall. It's for Oscar Mayer and Louis Rich products, and now includes all sizes and flavors, previously it was just certain varieties. You're asked to throw it out immediately or return it to the store.
