JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel will next month stage its first-ever
nationwide drill simulating a nuclear and chemical missile attack
on its cities, rescue services said Monday.
The exercise was initiated by the army's homefront corps in the
wake of last summer's war in Lebanon and Iran's calls for the
destruction of the Jewish state and its controversial nuclear
programme.
Israel suspects is Iran is aiming to develop an atomic bomb, but
Tehran insists its programme is for civilian energy purposes.
The main scenarios which will be simulated are a massive rocket
attack on cities as well as a "conventional and non-conventional
missile attack," Magen David Adom rescue services spokesman
Yerucham Mandola told AFP.
During the drill -- which will include army rescue forces, police,
medical and firefighting services -- air-raid sirens may be sounded
across the entire country.
The Hezbollah militia fired over 4,000 rockets against northern
Israel during the war last summer, killing more than 40 civilians
and paralysing the region's industry and economy.
During the 1991 Gulf War, Israeli citizens were equipped with gas
masks out of fear of a chemical attack. None of the missiles fired
from Iraq against Israel were equipped with chemical warheads.

KIDS' PRAYERS AIMED AGAINST AHMADINEJAD

Hoping for a modern-day reoccurrence of Purim's miraculous story of
redemption from a Persian ruler, a Jerusalem-based kabbalist hopes
to battle Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's nuclear threat
with children's prayers.
On Sunday at the Succat David elementary school, Rabbi David
Batzri, head of the Shalom Yeshiva, launched a nationwide campaign
to enlist 10,000 young children in a prayer rally against
Ahmadinejad before Purim.
"The children are praying that God annul any negative heavenly
decree against the Jewish people," said Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri, the
kabbalist's son. He denied that the children were praying for
Ahmadinejad's death.
"Rabbinic homiletic literature tells the story of how Mordechai the
Jew got 10,000 little children to wear sackcloth and ashes and pray
that God would foil Haman's diabolical plans," Yitzhak Batzri said.
"Their prayers prevented a calamity. My father hopes to do the same
against Ahmadinejad."
In recent years, the Iranian president has repeatedly called for
Israel to be "wiped off the map." Iran's push for nuclear
capability has raised fears in Israel that Ahmadinejad may soon be
capable of carrying out his threat.
Batzri's prayer rally is an expression of many Jews' concern that
the Iranian nuclear threat poses a real danger to Israel's
existence. But not all Jewish leaders agreed with Batzri's methods.
A spokesman for the Eda Haredit attacked Batzri's endeavor, saying:
"We must not incite the nations of the world against us."
"Obviously, we must not cooperate with people like Ahmadinejad. But
we also must not encourage the nations to attack us," added the
source, who helped blackball the group of Natorei Karta members who
took part in Ahmadinejad's recent Holocaust denial conference.
Yitzhak Batzri rejected the criticism, saying: "No one has the
right to criticize the prayers of a righteous person."
On Monday, David Batzri will be in Beersheba to rally more children
to his cause.

GULF COUNTRIES: NO AIR SPACE FOR ISRAEL

CAIRO, Egypt, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The Arab League said three Arab Gulf
countries have denied Israel use of their air space to strike Iran.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Mousa told reporters in Cairo the
foreign ministers of Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates said
there is no agreement allowing Israeli jets to use their air space
to reach Iran.
His remarks came a day after Israel's Haaretz daily said Israel has
received a green light from these three oil-rich states to pass
through their air space to launch air strikes against Iran's
Bushehr nuclear facility near the Arab Gulf region.
"These reports are fabricated," Mousa said, adding the foreign
ministers of these countries have "officially authorized" him to
relay this information.
"No Arab country could allow or give license to Israel to attack
Iran," the head of the 22-member Arab League said.
While Arab governments privately fear that Iran's nuclear program
threatens the Gulf security, they are unlikely to support Israel in
such an endeavor against a Muslim country in an already turbulent
region.
While Israel has no peace treaties with any of the six Arab Gulf
states, it has limited commercial ties with Qatar and Oman.
