have been unearthed at an archaeological dig in Pakistan. So-called
'plant-like' and 'trident-shaped' markings have been found on fragments of

*** Inderground Christians detained in China. BEIJING (AP) Police broke up a
church service at a rural home and detained all 25 worshipers in the latest
raid on Protestants worshiping outside state control in China. Police confi-
scated all Bibles found at the home in Sui county in central Henan province.
Eight days after the 25 Apr raid, 15 worshipers remained in detention. Many
rural Christians in China meet in homes due to lacks of clergy and churches.
The raid in Sui county was at least the 5th police have conducted in Henan,
a center of activity for the underground Protestant church, since October.

*** Church quits Southern Baptist group. GREENVILLE, SC (AP) - A church that
helped found the Southern Baptist Convention in 1845 has quit the denomina-
tion over its fundamentalist stand on such issues as the role of women. 1st
Baptist Church of Greenville voted 500-47 to sever its affiliation with the
nation's largest Protestant denomination. "This vote is about integrity,"
the Rev. Hardy Clemons said in a sermon before the vote. "Our call is to be
honest about who we are." 1st Baptist, with about 2,500 members, had already
stopped contributing to the convention in 1993. Then, last summer, the con-
vention declared that women should "submit graciously" to their husbands.
