Apache Helicopter Crash Kills Two
Wednesday, May 5, 1999; 2:40 a.m. EDT
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- An U.S. Apache helicopter crashed Wednesday while
on a training mission near the Albanian capital, killing two crew members,
U.S. European Command said.
The AH-64 helicopter went down at 1:30 a.m. local time 47 miles northeast of
the Tirana airport, the command said in a statement issued in Stuttgart,
Germany.
Spokesmen at the NATO office in Brussels said the crash site was within
Albania's borders, near Macedonia and Yugoslavia.
The European Command statement said there were no initial indications of
hostile fire and the cause of the crash was under investigation.
The identification of the crewmen was withheld pending notification of next
of kin.
``The aircraft was conducting a training mission in support of Operation
Allied Force,'' the command said.
This was the second crash of an Apache in two weeks. Last week, another
helicopter gunship went down in flames, also while on a training mission in
Albania. Its crewmen escaped with cuts and bruises.
On Saturday, two U.S. warplanes operating over and around Yugoslavia went
down. A U.S. Marine Corps AV8B Harrier plane crashed in the Adriatic Sea
while on a training mission for operations in the Balkans. The pilot was
reported safely rescued.
Hours earlier, a U.S. F-16 fighter plane had gone down over western Serbia.
NATO said the crash was caused by engine failure, but Yugoslav authorities
claimed the jet was shot down.
