Tornado Unearths Troopergate Trooper
Who was that dapper gentleman in the FEMA cap being interviewed by FOX News
Channel's Shepard Smith Tuesday night about the tornado that swept through
Kansas and Oklahoma?
Why it was none other than Raymond "Buddy" Young, who was appointed regional
director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency by President Clinton in
1993.
However, Clinton scandal buffs might better remember Young in his previous
incarnation -- as the onetime chief of Clinton's Arkansas security detail
who was accused by colleagues of using threats and other inducements to win
their silence about the president's sexcapades.
Indeed, Mr. Young's most memorable TV appearance came in 1993 when, during
an on-camera ABC News interview about charges Clinton had used his trooper
bodyguards to procure women, Young took a call from chief White House damage
controller Bruce Lindsey.
"Buddy, this is Bruce," Lindsey began in a tone that suggested the two knew
each other well. Then Lindsey explained that Young would be needed shortly
to do Troopergate spin for an upcoming CNN interview.
When Young mentioned that ABC News cameras were rolling as they spoke,
Lindsey quickly hustled himself off the line. Young neglected to tell
Lindsey that he'd taken the call on speakerphone, and that every word was
picked up by ABC microphones.
Troopers Danny Ferguson and Roger Perry told the press that they'd been
offered federal jobs to keep Clinton's secrets but didn't bite. For his
efforts, Mr. Young was awarded a FEMA position at a starting salary of
$93,000, where he now overseas federal relief for disasters like Monday's
devastating tornado strike.
