Pills for Poise

A profound change has occurred in the treatment of psychological problems.
Not
long ago, psychotherapy was the only choice for mood disorders such as
anxiety
and depression. Treatment involved thinking deeply about one's needs,
desires,
hopes and fears. Now, these illnesses are considered by many as dysfunctions
of
brain chemistry, best treated by brain-balancing chemicals. Panic and gloom
are
seen as a deficiency of neurotransmitters, and after all, the wisest, most
compassionate psychologist cannot fix defective serotonin uptake.

The pharmaceutical industry, which makes billions from the sale of
anti-anxiety drugs, is no doubt happy about this turn of events. Since pills
are
a lot cheaper than a psychotherapist, consumers can save money on meeting
their
mental health care needs. Psychotherapists, however, seem to be taking a
hit. In
one survey, one in five therapists said they were leaving the field, and
more
than 70% of those who will remain say they have suffered a loss of income
for
the first time in 20 years.

Is there a downside to all this pill popping?

For people chronically terrified of parties or fearful of making
presentations, anti-anxiety drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft, Ativin and Xanax
have
proven wonderfully effective in easing the panic response. These people
really
need medications just to get through the day. But millions more are dosing
themselves just to take the edge off a world awash with low level anxiety,
and
some experts wonder if this sort of routine drug use is really a good idea.

{Editor: No long-term studies have examined the health consequences of
taking
anti-anxiety medications over long periods. It's a big experiment with
humans--albeit smiling ones--acting as the guinea pigs.}
