CHAPTER XXIII

ROOSEVELT'S ODD AILMENTS AND HIS STRANGE DEATH

Mention has been made of F. D. R.'s attack of encephalomyclitis and the
stigmata which it left in its train. Both his physical and mental health were
seriously and permanently impaired by it. The uncontrollable temper, the
attacks of excitement with wild laughing, and of depression and high
suggestibility are among the sequella that might be expected after the
disease. Newspaper correspondents reported episodes of unreasoned and
sustained uproarious laughter of the same type that startled guests at the Du
Pont wedding and led Eleanor to pack him up and send him home. Tubbing and
hydrotherapy are effectively used in these conditions.

In 1937, it was posthumously reported by his medical advisers, President
Roosevelt began to suffer from minor apoplectic strokes. Their physical
effects were less obvious than usual because of the existent paralysis. These
repeated strokes continued up to the time of Roosevelt's death, constantly
growing more serious. At the time of the 1944 campaign against Dewey,
Roosevelt's speech was so seriously impaired by such a stroke that his
elissions[sic] were apparent to skilled listeners, in his radio broadcasts.

So carefully had his speech been trained that he overcame the effects of a
partial aphasia, a partial paralysis of his speech mechanism. At about this
time Fulton Lewis Jr. and the Newsweek reported that Roosevelt rambled along
mumbling a series of disconnected sentences at a news conference. In his
international affairs speech during the campaign, his condition was so bad
that Steve Early sought to explain it away on the ground that Roosevelt had
had too many cocktails and was drunk. To the skilled observer the situation
was pathetic indeed. President Roosevelt was dying on his feet. But his
masters were driving him to mouth the thoughts they had had written for him.
It was typical of the ruthlessness of the bosses of the Dynasty that they did
not hesitate to force a dying man to front for them.

At Teheran Roosevelt and Churchill met with Stalin to confirm the division of
the World between them. During the conference, Roosevelt had been prevailed
upon by the Russians to stay at the Russian Embassy because the Russians
said, the American Embassy was not safe. At the Russian Embassy, it is
reported, a special courtesy was extended to the guests. They were assigned a
special waiter who served them exclusively. It was later discovered that the
waiter was a physician who specialized in the science of poisoning,
toxicology. The use of doctors under Russia's state medical system in
disposing of persons whom the powers-that-be wished out of the way, by
poisoning them, has been attested to in the Moscow purge trails. Dr. Levine
testified that he had been ordered by his superiors to poison Maxim Gorki and
had done so.

Shortly after their departure, Winston Churchill became extremely ill. He was
hurried to Egypt where he was so sick that his death was expected
momentarily. But his life was saved by a protege of his, Sir Arthur Fleming,
the discoverer of penicillin, whom it is re, ported, he had sent through
medical school as a reward for saving his life from drowning.

Roosevelt also was extremely ill on his return. He was unable to walk or
stand unassisted, and never recovered his strength. His disability bore a
striking resemblance to poisoning with a form of curare, an Indian arrow
poison that had engaged the interest of Russian scientists. He wasted
steadily thereafter.

In informed circles there is told a tale of an Oriental poison handed down
from the days of Genghis Khan, that causes a slow, steady wasting and delayed
death. Its administration is spoken of in terms of "passing the silver cord".
Reputedly it has been Stalins favorite method of unobstrusively purging folks
that stood in the way. Lenin, after he had decided to oust Stalin, died such
a death. Likewise Krassin wasted away in the same manner. Rumors reached this
country before Roosevelt's return that the "silver cord" had been passed to
him and other conferees by Stalin.

In the meantime still another ailment had beseiged President Roosevelt. He
had developed a sudden rapid growth, a black mole over his left eyebrow. It
is shown in the frontispiece illustrations. Roosevelt disappeared from sight,
supposedly for a rest at Bernard Baruch's estate in the Carolinas. Residents
of Ormond Beach report that President Roosevelt was seen there as a guest in
the home of John D. Rockefeller. It is understandable that the Dynasty did
not want it known how closely Roosevelt was identified with Rockefeller and
responsive to his dictates.

Photographs taken after removal of the growth show a curious pigmented
butterfly area over FDR's nose and cheeks of the type that occurs in pellagra
and lupus erythematosus. It also occurs in chronic drinkers. Since Roosevelt
was a heavy drinker, that might be the explanation of the pigmentation. Or it
may have been due to his ailment.

Be that as it may, on his return from the South, Roosevelt showed a scar
which is visible in his photograph widely published at the time of his death.

It takes no great medical skill to diagnose the char. acter of the growth
over President Roosevelt's left eyebrow. It had the characteristic appearance
and behavior of a mole turned malignant and rapidly growing, a type of
cancer, or sarcoma, known as melanosarcoma.

This surmise is borne out by the reports published exclusively by New Deal
insider and inspired columnist, Drew Pearson to the effect that in the
following two years, Roosevelt had two growths removed from his head. Pearson
called them wens. But it would be safe to wager that they were extensions, or
metastases, of the cancerous growth that had not been removed with complete
success. What part these growths played in precipitating his death is unknown
because there is no record of any autopsy having been made though in such
deaths a postmortem is required.

In December of 1944, President Roosevelt visited a surgical clinic in Boston
to consult regarding a contemplated operation on the genitourinary tract. It
is reliably reported that the surgeons refused to operate because the
President's condition was so very poor, as to make him the worst type of
risk. During the time he was in Boston gravely concerned about his health,
the President's physician reported to the nation that he was in Georgia Warm
Springs and in the best of health. At about this time the Secret Service were
ordered to carefully guard Vice-President Truman because Roose.velt's death
might be imminent.

Admiral McIntyre, FDR's physician is reported to have said that Roosevelt's
body was not embalmed; that in less than four hours after death, it had
turned black, a reaction that occurs among other cases, in event of arsenic
poisoning.

On his return from Yalta, Roosevelt was obviously acutely ill. He was weak
and haggard and had lost a lot of weight. His face was so drawn that it
looked like a death mask. It reminded one of the case of cholera or acute
poisoning. For a time he was thought to be approaching the end and frantic
consultations were held. He responded to treatment and made a measure of
recovery. But pathetically he carried on and fronted for his masters. In
connection with Roosevelt's entertainment at Yalta, Paul Mallon reports that
once again there was extended to him the extraordinary courtesy of service by
a skilled physician as a waiter. Mallon's report ascribes to the physician
the task of sizing up Roosevelt's health for Stalin. "Pa" Watson, Roosevelt's
military aid, suddenly became ill, and died on the return trip.

A careful study of the few photographs of Roosevelt released in 1944 raised
the question of whether they are really photographs of Roosevelt or of a
stand-in. It was widely known that there were a number of standins who
resembled Roosevelt so closely that they appeared for him on occasions. If
the suspicions raised by the photographs are well founded, the mystery
deepens. What did happen to Roosevelt? Who was it that campaigned and was
re-elected in 1944?

The outstanding mystery regarding President Roosevelt's health is the
exact cause of his death at Georgia Warm Springs. There is a peculiar brevity
about re-ports of his death even in such dilatory newspapers as the New York
Times. "He died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage" its report states. No
mention is made of possible 'causes of the hemorrhage, which are many. Among
the causes could be such conditions as a bullet wound, a blow on the head, a
fractured skull, high blood pressure, an aneurysm, deficiency of vitamin K,
pachymeningitis, some forms of poisoning, and many others. No mention was
made in the report of any efforts at diagnosis or the customary treatments
that are used in these cases, though it is reported that he did survive the
initial attack for a period of time.

It is reported that on October 14, 1944, more than three weeks before the
election, Admiral McIntyre, on the insistence of some Southern Democrats,
examined President Roosevelt. Publicly he announced that the President was
in perfect health. But privately he reported that he could not be expected to
live more than six months.

The circumstances of President Roosevelt's death are so peculiar as to
justify the speculation, rumors and hush-hush reports that are circulating
and will not be stilled. Usually reliable sources state that there were a
number of people about, whose names and presence have never been mentioned.
There is talk of the presence in the President's cottage of a close personal
friend and favorite, an Albany matron who is never mentioned in the public
reports. It is said that she arrived with the Russian portrait painter, Mrs.
Elizabeth Shoumatoff and was whisked away with her by Henry Morganthau in a
car. It is believed that there was another Russian, N. Robbins, a
photographer with Roosevelt, at his death whose name never appears in the
reports. He also left within an hour after the death.

There has been talk of a small silver pistol that Roosevelt is said to have
carried with him. Rumors persist that there were a disfiguring bullet wound
of the head and unsightly powder burns. There has been talk of suicide in a
fit of depression to which he was prone: and of assassination by the agents
of a foreign power' Some rumors allege that he was assassinated in much the
same manner as President Harding is supposed to have been disposed of,
because he had served his purpose and was in the way of his bosses, the
powers-that-be.

There are reports that FDR's illness and repeated strokes had left his mental
state so bad that he babbled and could not be trusted to refrain from
divulging facts that the powers-that-be required be kept secret. A surprising
number of enemies of the New Deal, and of its discards have died sudden
deaths.

It is a curious fact that none of the persons present have been permitted to
talk about the matter. Moreover, no effort has been made even by the
yellowist journals to purchase the stories of bystanders. A rigid censorship
has been maintained.

Only an autopsy would definitely establish the direct and contributing causes
of death. Indeed, in such cases of sudden death, a post-mortem. is demanded
by the law and by the insurance companies before pay. ment of claims. No
autopsy of Roosevelt's corpse has been made to this date. In death, as in
life, Roosevelt disdained, defied and violated the law. His burial without
autopsy was a criminal act and a flagrant violation of the law. Only an
autopsy will clean up this entire situation and put an end to the flow of
rumors, which have some justification in the failure to make a full
post-mortem examination. The law requires criminal prosecution of those
responsible for such illicit burials.

It is puzzling in the extreme that the cause of death was not investigated,
but instead was hushed up most rigidly. It is more than curious that his
coffin was never opened for public viewing of his body at any time, even
during the funeral services. It is hard to understand how the Roosevelts with
their love of ostentation and almost exhibitionistic delight in public
homage, missed the chance for a display of public adoration. This is all the
more strange since Elmer Davis of the O.W.I. broadcast to the soldiers abroad
almost daily, the lie that Roosevelt's body lay in state in the White House
and was viewed daily by throngs.

It has been reported that the Russian Ambassador demanded, on official order
of his government, that the casket be opened and that he be permitted to view
the body; and that this request was denied. Both the request and its denial
must be regarded as extraordi. nary. The Russians might have suspected that
the body was not that of Roosevelt, as rumors allege. This raises the
question: "Why was it so important to the Russians to make positive that
Roosevelt was dead?" Could it be that he was a tool who had served his
purpose and, with Churchill, would be an annoyance in the way of future
plans? Could it be that Russia planned al. leging secret agreements that
might be denied? Could it be merely the scientific interest of a
toxicologist? Or had Stalin found Roosevelt's obsequiousness coupled with his
betrayal of his own country a disgusting annoyance?

There is more in this situation that meets the eye. Ample excuse is given
for. rumors, however wild. And credence will continue to be given them until
the body is disinterred and autopsied. Failure to do so indicates a desire to
hide something that may be of serious import to the nation.

It has became a standing practice in this country to protect the interests
that control the country by denying the nation and the world at large
information on the state of the President's health. This was done in the case
of Grover Cleveland's cancer of the palate, Wilson's apoplexy and F.D.R.'s
various ailments. That would be of no moment if the President's powers and
influence were checked and limited as provided in the Constitution. But those
checks have been steadily and progressively eliminated and in many respects
the President's power has become more absolute than. that of most kings.
Illnesses which incapacitate the President enable the group that controls him
to work their will on the nation in his name. That is a very strong
temptation that may actually endanger the President's life at times of
disagreement with his bosses. In a way the secrecy regarding the ailments of
the President illustrates and stresses how much the office has assumed the
aura of monarchy.

Certainly the health of Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, a
title in which Roosevelt took great delight and a role which he had insisted
on playing, is of more vital significance to the nation than the health of a
mere private. But the private is compelled to un-dergo a rigid physical and
mental examination before he is accepted for service; and he must continue to
be revealed fit by subsequent examinations so long as he remains in the
service. Psychopathic conditions call for compulsory relief from duty and
discharge. The na.tion can not demand less of so important figure as its
Commander in Chief. Nevertheless twice in a quarter of a century, the helm
of the nation's ship of state has been held by paralytics who were mental and
physical wrecks, Wilson and Roosevelt.

The safety and security of the nation demands that never again shall its
destiny be controlled by agencies operating through the impotent hands of a
prostrated executive. The nation must demand as rigid medical examinations
and as fit a physical and mental condition of its chief executive as it
demands of the lowest soldier. There is danger enough in the domination and
control of a healthy executive by malign forces. With a diseased executive it
is certain, and fraught with grave peril for the nation. It should never
happen again. The nation should require by law periodic phys. ical
examination of the President and honest reports to it of the findings.
Disabling mental and physical conditions, by law should disqualify the
incumbent and require his replacement.

The deception perpetrated on the public in regard to Roosevelt's health is
characteristic of that which prevailed in all matters during his
Administration.

No "close-up" of FDR was released to the press after late 1943. The center
photograph in the frontispiece was derived from one released by the Press
Association. It was a very distant view entitled "FDR GIVES STATE OF NATION
BROADCAST". The head had to be tremendously enlarged to secure the
illustration.

Careful study of this enlargement reveals striking differences between it and
authentic "close-ups" of FDR, made at the time when press photographers were
permitted to take "close-ups" for publication. These differences are not of a
nature that can be caused by either age or disease. The head is longer and
the distance between the cheek bones narrower. The teeth, ears and nose are
strikingly different. The eyes are crossed inward, instead of showing a
slight outward deviation.

Was the person who sat for the photograph and made the broadcast one of the
several understudies or doubles for FDR? If so, what had happened to FDR
himself? Was FDR still alive? Who had been reelected and inaugurated? Who was
the man who had suffered the "massive cerebral hemorrhage" in Georgia under
such suspicious circumstances, and who had been dumped hurriedly into a grave
at Hyde Park, in violation of the law, without an autopsy? Was both fraud and
murder committed?
