When American forces entered Vietnamese villages in search of communist guerrillas, the Americans were defeated not because they were met by overwhelming numbers of enemy forces armed to the teeth. Rather they were defeated because they were met by villagers who rarely supported their effort to root out the guerrillas....But even the South Vietnamese government conceded (in 1964) that 4 to 5 million people...supported the National Liberation Front." This in fact is the reality of People's War, ignored by all those wishing to see the war as a battle between good and evil, the good against the International Communist Conspiracy -- later broken down to the good agaiunst Chinese expansionism, or Russian hegemonism, or the "civil war," between the North and South. The evidence is all there but many want to cling to the good vs evil version of the war for their own ideological reasons or simply because it is too hard or painful to admit the truth even to themselves -- I certainly went through this pain and denial. Some, of course, see it to their career or peace-of-mind advantage, to deny this reality.
