Scientists have discovered that when people lie their noses really do grow, writes Mark Macaskill. A study has shown nasal tissues become engorged with blood - causing them to swell - during a deception. While the effect may not be noticeable to an observer, the liars will be drawn to touch their itching noses and hence betray their guilt. During the course of their research, scientists studied television footage of Bill Clinton's bogus testimony before a grand jury on the nature of his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. They found it revealed a variety of telltale signs that indicated the president was not telling the truth - including repeated touching of his nose. Dr Alan Hirsch, head of the Smell and Taste Foundation in Chicago, and Charles Wolf, of the University of Illinois, discovered that when Clinton was questioned about his affair, he became tongue-tied, frequently broke his gaze and touched his nose more often than when he was being truthful. Hirsch has previously published research revealing that erectile tissue in the nose expands when a person is sexually aroused. He now believes that such engorgement also takes place when a person is lying, causing inflammation and a desire to touch the tip of the nose. The scientists, who declined to discuss their research in detail, are expected to deliver the results of their study at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association later this week. They believe the act of telling a lie can prompt a release of hormones that triggers the nose. The desire to scratch the nose is one of 23 different body language and verbal indicators of lying proposed by psychologists. Ultimately, they hope that these could be combined to give a reliable checklist of behaviour. Other indicators of dishonesty include leaning forward when talking, averting the gaze and speech errors.
