It has always fascinated me that over at least four hundred years, this massive disparity has remained between Southern and Northern England. (Leaving aside Scotland, which has been more of a colony than an equal partner with England since the Act of Union.) One would have expected some variation at least in the geographic concentration of wealth, but no--the richest counties in Britain are the southern and even more the southeastern counties of England, just as it was in the days of the Tudors and Stuarts. Tony Blair is treading a very fine line, granting Scotland and Wales a measure of autonomy to keep them from declaring independence, while at the same time defending hotly the right of the Kosovars to secede from Yugoslavia... Surely he realizes what any educated person with any understanding of Europe must see, namely that the artificial nature of too many modern European states is finally approaching its breaking point. Spain and Italy are experiencing severe regional tensions; France could easily follow suit; Germany, so recently reunited, could easily split apart again... With regionalism becoming a larger and larger factor in European politics, can the United Kingdom remain united much longer? And even more importantly, *should* it remain united?
