More Guns (Not Fewer) Needed

by Robert W. Lee

The bloody toll attributable to gun control continues to mount. Witness the
tragic mayhem at Littleton, Colorado's Columbine High School, where 15 died
(including the two suspects, who reportedly committed suicide following the
rampage). The perpetrators, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold (seniors at the
school), began shooting and tossing pipe-bombs shortly before noon on April
20th. For the better part of two hours they methodically roamed the halls,
killing and wounding helpless victims whose only desperate option was an
attempt to hide. None of the teachers or administrators were armed. Had one
or more adults, properly trained in the use of firearms, been carrying
concealed weapons, there would likely have been relatively few casualties.
Indeed, had there been a policy requiring that a minimum number of adult
personnel be armed (say, three to six), it is unlikely that Harris and
Klebold (whose plan was obviously predicated on the assumption that there
would be a dearth of effective resistance during the early stages of the
assault) would have made their move in the first place.

One of the many sad and frustrating aspects of the tragedy is the thought of
teachers and administrators striving to help students avoid the onslaught by
running, hiding, putting out lights, and cowering in crowded rooms, hoping
that they will not be discovered. Had a few been armed, the tables could
have quickly turned, and many young lives could have been saved.

As it was, according to the police, some acted heroically. For instance,
Principal Frank DeAngelis and a teacher only known to students as "Mrs.
Miller" (apparently science teacher Theresa Miller) were able to keep many
students from running into harm's way by leading them instead to areas of
the school that would, happily, serve as relatively safe havens. The body
count would otherwise have been even higher. One student later said of "Mrs.
Miller": "What she did was awesome. She is a hero. She saved our lives."

The Littleton incident demonstrates, as have the other school-related
shootings, that gun control laws place the innocent at a deadly disadvantage
to lawless predators. Fortunately, however, there are signs that the number
of Americans who are at last peering through the false rhetorical
smokescreen raised by anti-gun zealots, and realizing the extent to which
gun control laws place them and their children in jeopardy, is
increasing. They are beginning to recognize the folly of domestic
disarmament, and can see why more guns are sorely needed in the hands of
qualified and properly trained school personnel. To avoid future Littletons,
conceal-carry legislation that requires law enforcement authorities to grant
conceal-carry permits, once applicants have met reasonable good-character
and training requirements, should be approved in each state that does not
presently have it. Schools should not be placed off-limits. Any teachers,
administrators even custodians who are willing to undertake the task of
defending their own lives, and those of their colleagues and students,
should receive a stipend, over and above their regular salaries,
commensurate with the somber responsibility they will be assuming.
Guns are not the problem. In the right hands, they are potentially a
significant part of the solution.
