-Caveat Lector- Ex-GOP Leader Admits Funneling Money .c The Associated Press NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- A former county GOP chairman pleaded guilty Thursday to violating campaign finance law by illegally funneling $11,000 to Democratic U.S. Sen. Robert Torricelli. Berek Paul Don, 51, pleaded guilty to election law violation, mail fraud and tax evasion. He could get up to five years in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines when sentenced Aug. 19. Don, a lawyer, was Bergen County GOP chairman during the 1996 election. He said he cashed an $11,000 check from political donor David Chang, who had asked him to get the money into Torricelli's campaign fund, and solicited others to make donations with the understanding that they would be reimbursed. Torricelli's chief of staff, Jamie Fox, said the campaign was ``totally unaware'' that Don or anyone else was not following election law rules. ``There's no way you can know,'' Torricelli said. ``People have to learn to take these laws seriously.'' Don is the 18th person charged by the government's Campaign Financing Task Force, and the third plea deal announced in the past week. The others involved two longtime friends of President Clinton, former Lippo Group executive John Huang and Yah Lin ``Charlie'' Trie, a restaurateur from Little Rock, Ark. Don said he was helped by his onetime law partner, Carmine R. Alampi. Prosecutors would not discuss Alampi, who did not return a phone call.
