Portuguese Defense Minister Resigns
LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- Portugal's defense minister resigned Friday after a
document that included the complete list of the country's secret service
agents was leaked to the press.
Prime Minister Antonio Guterres said Foreign Minister Jaime Gama would take
over for Jose Veiga Simao, the Socialist government's second defense minister
to resign in the past two years.
The resignation came as most Portuguese dailies reported they had received a
classified document that Veiga Simao had forwarded to a parliamentary
commission investigating the military-run SIEDM secret service.
The papers said the leaked document included a list of the service's agents,
although none published the list.
The papers also did not reveal how they obtained the document, the summary of
an investigation Veiga Simao had ordered into the running of SIEDM.
Veiga Simao had served as education minister and industry minister in
previous administrations.
His resignation came five months ahead of general elections, which Guterres'
Socialists are expected to win.
Veiga Simao had replaced Antonio Vitorino, who resigned in November 1997 over
allegations he evaded taxes in a real estate purchase eight years ago.
