I was recently having a chat with a very sane, upright lady in her mid-sixties. She has
children and grandchildren and is part of a huge family whose patriarch is my next-door
neighbor. She had come with her husband to pay a weekend visit. It was evening and
we were standing out on the lush lawn in a rural village when the sirens at the fire
station went off. My companion got very excited and wondered where the trouble was.
The firehouse is down at the corner, so you can see the trucks leaving from the front
lawn. My companion got very excited, recalling how, as children, they all used to
come running out of the house when the siren went off to see which directions the fire
trucks would go in. Then suddenly she was talking about the night the school--the old
school--bruned down. The great glee in her voice was not muted by the intervening
years. Memory was sharp and the sense of recalled pleasure...like a dream come
true...was there in her voice. She was grinning from ear to ear....Then she was
laughing with the remembrance...
Burning down the school has been a fantasy for many ...and probably goes back to
the time when schools first began.
