FWIW, the last time this came up on the list, I did an extensive search both
on the Internet and offline, and was NOT able to confirm the antisemitic
remarks attributed to Martin Luther. Every reference led back to dubious
sources. My conclusion, therefore, is that the allegations that Luther held
antisemitic views are just that, allegations, probably originating with
genuine antisemites who wanted to give their ideology an aura of historical
legitimacy.

More to the point than wondering how Luther's Germany became the Hitlerian
abomination, ask yourselves how the *liberal* Germany of Beethoven and
Schiller, the Germany that produced the "Ode to Joy," could become the Third
Reich of the Nazis. I have spent a lifetime struggling with that question, and
I still have no answer, except to say that Germans, like all other human
beings, are extraordinarily complex and contradictory beings. Remember this
when contemplating the Nazis: the same people that produced the Declaration of
Independence and the United States Constitution, in the century that followed,
engaged in multiple imperialist wars of aggression and decimated the native
peoples of North America in a tragedy at least as horrible as the Holocaust,
as well as embracing an economic system that reduced millions of their fellow
American citizens to wage slavery no better than the chattel slavery practiced
in the slave states of the South. Each of us is a potential Hitler.
