-Caveat Lector- Police slayings in low-crime Sweden jolt country, dominate headlines STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jun 01, 1999 (AP Worldstream via COMTEX) -- It was a disturbing crime to begin with: two policemen in a small town gunned down following a bank robbery. Bizarre twists and turns in the case have jolted Swedes and dominated front-page headlines across the country the past four days. One suspect is a former mercenary who, despite being of mixed race, belongs to a pro-Nazi group, according to police. Jackie Arkloev, 25, was recovering in hospital Tuesday following his capture the afternoon before. He was shot in the back by plainclothes police who claimed he made a threatening move. He was unarmed. Another suspect, still at large, is a convicted felon who police claim took part in the robbery and shootings while on weekend leave from prison. Tony Olsson, 26, was serving a six-year sentence for plotting to murder a mother of five. In recent months he also was allowed out of jail to rehearse and perform in a play at Sweden's national theater. The play, ''7:3,'' is about prisoners with neo-Nazi beliefs. The title refers to the section of Sweden's penal code that deals with escape-prone repeat offenders. ''With great dismay and immense disappointment we have noted that one of the actors in ... ''7:3'' and another person ... are involved in the henious crimes, the police murders,'' Riksteatern CEO Thomas Lyrevik said Tuesday. Nevertheless, his press release added the theater views the play as an artistic success. Olsson returned to prison after the Thursday evening performance, police said, and departed Friday morning on weekend leave just hours before the crimes were committed. Justice Minister Laila Freivalds said the events don't change her belief that prisoners should be allowed out on leave, though perhaps under electronic surveillance. ''Not even one percent disappear or return late,'' she told the national news agency TT. ''The weak points are the evaluation of risks and the follow-up of how it's used.'' The third suspect, Andreas Axelsson, was wounded in a shootout with police last Friday and remains in police custody. On Tuesday, police halted the morning commuter trains near Linkoeping in southern Sweden after receiving a tip that Olsson might be in one. Passengers were evacuated and a suspect detained, but he was the wrong man. Crimes of violence, particularly against police, are rare in Sweden. Only about 30 officers have been slain in the line of duty this century.
