Chemical Executive Sentenced
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) -- The former chief executive of a company that operated
a chemical plant in southeast Georgia was sentenced Wednesday to nine years
in federal prison for polluting the surrounding marshland.
Christian A. Hansen Jr., 72, the ex-CEO of the New Jersey-based Hanlin Group
Inc., also was ordered to pay a $20,000 fine over what some environmental
officials have called one of the worst cases of industrial pollution in the
country.
Alfred R. Taylor, the former manager at the LCP Chemicals-Georgia Inc. plant,
also was sentenced Wednesday to six and a half years in prison.
Sentencing was delayed for Randall Hansen, another former executive of the
Hanlin Group and the son of Christian A. Hansen Jr.
The LCP plant was closed in February 1994 and declared a Superfund cleanup
site by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA said the 550 acres were rife with contaminants including mercury,
lead, polychlorinated biphenyls and refinery wastes.
