A month ago, I heard a news report that claimed approximately forty
percent of our population is "on" some kind of medication or other.
Since drugs are the ideal commodity-- the customer's mind,body and spirit
literally DEMANDS the product--evil human beings will continue to profit
from the spiritual/moral/economic degradation of others.
But if we are going to get at the root (radicalis, Latin: radix) of the
problem, shouldn't we try and understand why so many of our fellow
citizens find the real world to be intolerable? What prompts their desire
to escape?
Years ago, at the turn of the century, alcohol appears to have been a
major problem in America.... The average working person would often stop
off at the local tavern for his pail of beer. How have things changed
since then?
Perhaps, human beings have always been trying to find change their
consciousness through drugs of one sort or another. At least, that's the
argument of individuals like Huxley, Alpert and Leary (those drug gurus
of the sixties, who presumably had ties to the Tavistock Institute).
But irrespective of the conspiracy associations, what does the problem
say about our "civilization"?
