Umm. Frisia and Provence actually had occurred to me, but somehow the others
slipped my mind. BTW, as long as we're adding in the Caucasus, I have a
feeling that the Kuban will spin off as an autonomous or independent Cossack

The prime question here, ISTM, is which of the new microstates will become
offshore tax and data havens? I can definitely see Padania going this way--it
already has the bulk of Italy's financial and information industry. Slovenia
seems to be edging in that direction as well.
But above and beyond such mental maunderings, "virtual states" are a reality
*now*, becoming more real every time we log onto the Internet. The old order
is struggling to make its medieval laws adjust to the new model, with only
mixed success. ...And what happens when the first commercial space stations
(which are only about ten years away) go independent? "Indeed do many things
come to pass."
