A MEETING WITH L.D. BROWN

Last night, June 17, I went to a public forum in the San Fernando Valley to
hear a former Bill Clinton bodyguard tell of his own personal experiences
with Bill Clinton as he promotes his new book, Crossfire. If I left feeling
that there was a great deal that L.D. Brown didn't tell us, I did leave with
a conviction that Brown and his lovely wife Becky were lucky to be alive and
knew it. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that he didn't fit the mold
of a classic Clinton hater (secretly supporting a Republican agenda).

Brown told the story of his years of service to Clinton and spent a good
deal of time on the salaciously salacious aspects of Clinton's personal
life. There is no doubt that this man was very close to Clinton and all of
his private affairs and it was refreshing to see that Brown was able to
openly confirm CIA cocaine flight into Mena airport and the fact the Bill
Clinton was well aware of them. He tended to place Barry Seal in the
category of rogue cowboy and was a little unclear, I think, about his
exposure to Terry Reed.

Having had my own experiences I am a bit skeptical of Brown's description of
how he came to apply for CIA and his exposures. His description of the
initial interview processes is accurate but - if I had my guess- I would say
that Bill was ordering/requesting/assigning one of his trusted personal
bodyguards to join the Agency and represent his interests on the operational
side.

While Brown proved himself very intelligent and credible in some areas my
impression is that he is very nave in others. He was aware of the fact that
a memorandum had existed from 1982 which exempted the CIA from reporting
drug trafficking allegation. Yet, in spite of having had many, many meeting
with Ken Starr and staff, he had no idea, until I told him why Ken Starr had
so bolloxed his various investigations, that Ken Starr had helped negotiate
it. Throughout his talk he kept expressing wonderment as to why Starr kept
letting people down.

I also wasn't totally impressed with his assertions that Felix Rodriguez was
a "very nice man" who "absolutely hated drugs as much as communism". That
just didn't wash. It was Felix who sent Brown to Mexico to take care of the
co-pilot who turned out to be Reed but not anyone brown had previously seen.

I have no doubt that Brown was sent to hit Reed by Rodriguez. I also have no
doubt that - to this day - Brown is afraid of Rodriguez. We may never know
the truth there.

When asked about his relationship with of knowledge of a man named James
Blair - a powerful Arkansas financial wheeler dealer, close to Clinton Brown
replied that he knew the name and had seen the man around Clinton. He stated
that Blair was an Arkansas power broker on the order of a Don Tyson but
seemed to indicate that he had no special knowledge about illegal activities
of Blair in connection with the Clinton. I was unable to pursue this line
further.

I provided Brown with a card containing information on how to subscribe to
the CIA-Drugs list and told him a great many people would like to share with
him. He said he would and took the card.

It was difficult to question him in more detail because of the large crowd.

My assessment of LD Brown is that he was, at one time, a young, handsome,
member of the "in-crowd", an "up and comer" young cop who benefited and
walked into gray areas with his boss and probably indulged in the high life.
While I do not think that L.D. brown has told us everything I do not think
that he is some agent working on someone's behalf. I believe that when he
saw himself crossing the BIG line with Barry Seal he stepped back from the
abyss. Whatever he is not telling us I believe is because he has a wife and
family and because he is trying to stay alive, like any good whistleblower,
by hiding in plain sight. I think he is terrified of Felix and the Bushes.

What was most telling - and he didn't even get it - I don't think - is the
significance of the fact that he was flying on the Bush campaign plane with
Jack Stephens and George W in 1988 while his boss was running Dukakis'
campaign.
