-Caveat Lector- Ethiopia seizes Somali town Tuesday, 29 June 1999 18:34 (GMT) (UPI Focus) By United Press International Ethiopian troops have seized a Somalian town as a long border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea spreads southeast. The war has at least three sides and is raging on the Horn of Africa, as fighting between troops and rebels from the three countries has intensified. Ethiopian and Eritrea, both arid African countries on the Indian Ocean, are battling over a shared 600-mile (1,000 km) border. But as the border fighting drags on - it began in early 1998 - Ethiopia has additionally targeted what it calls rebels operating from Somalia. On Monday, Ethiopian forces captured the southern Somalian town of Garba Harre, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday. Hundreds of Ethiopian soldiers crossed the border in armored vehicles and met minimal resistance from the Somali National Front, which had recently held the town. The war has spread south into Somalia as both Ethiopia and Eritrea side with various Somalian factions. BBC correspondents say that the latest Ethiopian advances have brought much of south Somalia under its control. The Somali National Front is among the Somali factions reported to have the support of Eritrea. On the Eritrea-Ethiopia border, some of the fighting troops are reported to be only 50 yards (meters) apart. Last week, the U.N. Security Council called for a cease-fire in the long, bloody fight for the border. Eritrea's government says its border is unchanged from internationally recognized colonial borders going back a century, and that Ethiopia has illegally occupied Eritrean territory. But the Organization of African Unity, which on June 18 demanded the two sides stop fighting, seems to support Ethiopia in the conflict, saying that the territory Ethiopian troops have claimed does belong to Ethiopia.
