The opposition coalition in Serbia has a strong monarchist aspect. In 1997,
Vuk Draskovic, head of the Serbian Renewal Movement (a pro-monarchy party and
part of the opposition bloc) was the opposition's presidential candidate. In
that year, he said, referring to the Crown Prince, "Serbia needs a Juan
Carlos - and he is here in London!"

More recently, Vuk was Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister, appointed to appease
the opposition. He was recently fired, I believe, for disagreeing with Slobo
over something.

If Slobo is ousted in the near future (a distinct likelihood), and a
coalition of opposition parties takes over, Vuk Draskovic and people like him
are certain to be prominent in it. I think Dag is right when he says that a
restoration is a more immediate possibility in Yugoslavia than in any of the
other Balkan states.

A couple months ago, my parents hosted a reception at their house for U.S.
Presidential candidate Bob Smith (a conservative Catholic candidate). I, of
course, was present, and took the opportunity to corner both of his aides who
were present and discuss the Balkans with them.

In the course of our discussion, I brought up the Yugoslavian Royal Family
and Yugoslavian monarchism. I made my point about the advantages of a
restoration in Yugoslavia. The aides were decidedly skeptical about this at
first - clearly, it is not in the nature of American politicians to even
consider monarchy. But, as I gave my arguments concerning the success of
other restorations (Spain and Cambodia, for example), the personal popularity
of the Crown Prince, and the success of the Prince's recent appearances on
Larry King Live and CNN Talk Back Live (I gave them a transcript of the
latter), I could tell that I was having some effect on them.

A Karageorgevic restoration may not be "on the agenda" for NATO, but it is
certainly not something they would oppose should the question come up.

Serbia and Montenegro are republics of the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia is today not what it used to be, but it
still is Yugoslavia.

At Crown Prince Alexander's website you can read "of Yugoslavia
and Serbia"... The Crown Prince regards himself as pretender to
both thrones, being united in 1918 (though by force). It is difficult
to know whether Crown prince Nikola has any serious pretensions
about the Montenegrin throne or not, since he has made few public
statements.
