-Caveat Lector- From: Dan S <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Excerpt from NLECTC Law Enforcement & Corrections Technology News Summary, Thursday, July 8, 1999 (http://www.nlectc.org) "Radio Device Could Put FANGS Into Police Pursuit Abilities" Police (07/99) Vol. 23, No. 7, P. 36; Frio, Dan A New York engineer and a sheriff's deputy have developed a radio-controlled microchip, which they hope will be placed in every new car sold in the United States, allowing police to disable suspect cars' accelerators. Before the Frequency Activated Neutralization Generator System (FANGS) cuts off the gas pedal, the suspect's lights will flash and the horn will blow repeatedly to warn others in the area. But automakers need to be convinced to install FANGS chips in new cars, which could pose problems since the disabled accelerators could lead to accidents, inviting lawsuits. Also, some fear that FANGS' use of radio waves opens it to manipulation by non-police individuals, although the technology incorporates an internal alarm to alert authorities to tampering. Even if FANGS becomes standard in new cars, its drawbacks will keep it from entirely replacing older techniques for ending chases. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] --------------------------- ONElist Sponsor ---------------------------- Campaign 2000 is here! http://www.onelist.com Discuss your thoughts; get informed at ONElist.
