As He does each year a few days before the Belgian National Day (21st of
July), the King ennobled a few Belgian personnalities by Royal Decrees.
Here's the text of the new "Faveurs nobiliaires" published yesterday by the
Moniteur Belge (9/7/99) :
"MINISTERE DES AFFAIRES ETRANGERES, DU COMMERCE EXTERIEUR ET DE LA
COOPERATION AU DEVELOPPEMENT
Faveurs nobiliaires
Par arr�t�s royaux du 26 avril 1999 les faveurs nobiliaires suivantes sont
accord�es :
- concession du titre personnel de vicomte � M. Alphonse Verplaetse;
- concession du titre personnel de baronne � Mmes Alys Clark, �pouse de M.
Francis Cattoir, et Eva Gerretsen, veuve de M. August Bal;
- concession du titre personnel de baron au chevalier Robert Stouthuysen et
� MM. Karel Boone, Paul Levy, Alain Philippson, Marc Servotte et Robert
Tollet;
- concession du titre personnel de chevalier � MM. Georges Baines et Raoul
Debroeyer alias Royer."

As you can read, there are 10 ennoblements and a promotion in the noble
hierarchy from Knight to Baron. All this titles are ad personam. So the
title won't be transmitted to the heirs, but the nobility will well be
transmitted to their lineage.
The Viscount Alphone Verplaetse is the former Gouvernor of the Belgian
National Bank, who applied a monetary policy which led Belgium in the group
of Euro-Countries.
The Baroness Alys Clark was responsible of social activities of the Belgian
Red Cross between 1945 and 1962. Then, she founded "l'Association pour le
Volontariat", of which she had been the president for about 20 years.
The Baroness Eva Gerretsen founded the Speeltheater, a theater school for
young people.
The Baron Robert Stouthuysen, former Knight, is the boss of big Flemish
enterprises (Janssen Pharmaceutica and Regionale Uitgevermaatschappij)
The Baron Karel Boonen is the former President of the F.E.B (F�d�ration des
Entreprises de Belgique, otherwise the trade-union of the compagnies in
Belgium) and is the C.E.O. of Corona-Lotus.
The Baron Paul Levy is a former great resistant to the Nazis for WW II. It
was one of the Belgian voices who spoke on the BBC radio from London.
The Baron Alain Philippson is a banker (Banque Degroof) and is at the head of
philantropical associations.
The Baron Marc Servotte is the former Directeur-G�n�ral of the O.B.C.E.
(Office Belge du Commerce Ext�rieur), which promotes Belgian exports. When
the King Albert II was still the Prince of Li�ge, he was the Pr�sident
d'Honneur of the O.B.C.E. and had many contacts with the Baron Servotte, with
whom he prepared missions abroad to promote Belgian exports. The Prince
Philippe of Belgium, Duke of Brabant, is now the Pr�sident d'Honneur of the
O.B.C.E.
The Baron Robert Tollet is Pr�sident du Conseil Central de l'Economie (a
political organ which analyses the evolution of the Belgian economy. He 's
also the Pr�sident of the Conseil d'Administration de l'U.L.B. (the Brussels
French-speaking University).
The Knight Georges Baines is an well-known architect.
The Knight Raoul Debroeyer, alias Royer, is a well-known caricaturist in the
paper "Le Soir".
