If we accept the logic used in a number of recent posts to the list, then the
demonstrable fact that Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch Society, was a
practicing Unitarian implies that the Unitarian-Universalist Association is a
fascist organization. In reality, of course, this is the notorious "fallacy of
the excluded middle," which assumes that a member of the class is equal to the
entire class. Similar arguments include: "Karl Marx was a Jew, therefore all
Jews are Marxists;" "Some Catholics are anti-Semitic, therefore all Catholics
are anti-Semitic;" "Bill Clinton is a philanderer, therefore all Democrats are
philanderers."
The world would be, if not a better place, at least somewhat saner if more
people studied elementary logic before opening their mouths.
