What was the REAL reason why the Pythagoreans --a bona fide secret society
that had "cells" throughout Greece and the Mediterranean in the 5th c. BCE--
were enjoined not to eat beans? The OFFICIAL explanation? They believed
beans harbored human souls on the lower end of the scale of manifestation,
awaiting reincarnation, and just as we say "bless you" when a person sneezes,
believing one's "spirit" (a word originally meaning "breath") jumps out of
one's nose during a sneeze, Pythagoreans understood farts as he cries of
trapped unincarnate souls escaping from their intestinal purgatory. Absurd!
Hence there must have been, beyond this, an ESOTERIC reason, spiritually
loftier than this tale "leaked" for the ears of the hoi polloi like the
passing of wind ...
