The ironic thing about this whole Tea Pot Dome scandal was that it turned
out in the end to be crucial to the US defense. After the war ended the
captured Japanese planners of the Pearl Harbor attack were shown pictures of
the above mentioned storage tanks. They were asked if they knew what they
were. Of course they replied. Why then, they were asked, did you not bomb
them? The Japanese replied that they did not think that oil would be
critical to the US navy as it was to the Japanese navy and so they had
chosen to attack the ships instead. Then they were told that if they had
destroyed those tanks that it would have stopped the whole US Navy for
several months and that the US would then have had a tremendous problem
stopping the Japanese offensive. Those storage tanks were crucial to our
early successes in the Pacific.
