Burning Bush: George Jr.'s Cross to Bear
FILED 05/24/99
One of the only things preventing George Bush's son, George W. Bush Jr.,
from achieving a mortal lock on the next Republican Presidential
nomination are those pesky rumors that he's used recreational drugs.
Unlike President Clinton (whose presidency has been oddly defined by his
confession that he once attempted to smoke pot but, as an asthmatic,
"didn't inhale"), GWB Jr. did more than just experiment once or twice
with cocaine, allege the rumormongers, and the man himself has
acknowledged that he was a real party animal until a few years ago,
before he allegedly "grew up."

So far, Bush has neither confirmed nor denied the nose-candy rumors,
which is understandable from his point of view. A denial could exhume
eyewitnesses or other evidence, and the denials he would have to issue
would make Clinton's "I-did-not-have-sexual-intercourse" fibs look like
cake in comparison. Of course, any admission that President George
Bush's Own Son ever indulged in any illegal recreational drug would
probably spell instant doom for any hopes of him, or any other
Republican candidate, getting elected to the White House. After all, no
one was tougher on illegal drugs than George Herbert Walker Bush Senior.
(Unless you were trading arms for coke in Central America, but that's
another story.)

While the mainstream press has downplayed these rumors, a George Bush
parody Website has been having a high old time with them. Fired up by
Bush's refusal to address these rumors, these jolly individuals have
launched www.gwbush.com, as a continuous parody of Bush's nascent
Presidential campaign. So far on the parody site, Bush has promised to
launch a new initiative, "Amnesty 2000," to absolve everyone like him
who experimented with cocaine before they "grew up." Interviews are also
presented with major Bush contributors such as the corrections industry
(who benefit directly from the Drug War).

The Website itself was formed by an odd partnership. Zack Exley, the
Boston computer consultant who set up this parody website and reserved
the domain name, describes himself as "a Christian who loathes
hypocrisy." Most of the content on the site was provided by RTMARK, a
group that "specializes in calling attention to corporate subversion of
the US political and electoral process." RTMARK says it is "primarily
devoted to anti-corporate activism, and counts the very companies that
Mr. Exley works for as some of its targets." Meanwhile, the parody
Website is so successful that it's listed as an unofficial Bush campaign
site in Yahoo! and other search engines.

This in turn inspired the Junior Bush to try to buy the domain names.
Exley asked for $350,000, so Bush filed a complaint with the Federal
Elections Commission on May 3 to prevent Exley & Co. from running their
parody--thus proving not only that he has no sense of humor but a very
thin skin. Bush's reaction has set all the "Freedom of the Internet"
watchdogs loose on this battle, since it could set precedents for the
limits of Internet parody and rights to own domain names. Junior Bush
also decided to go out and buy any and every website URL that might be
confused as one of his own-- there were 60 of them, according to
report--including bushbites.com and bushsux.org. (This desperate attempt
at damage control was probably inspired by fellow Republican Rudy
Giuliani's anti-Hillary-Clinton Website, www.hillaryno.com although one
might think that if Bush were successful at preventing Exley & RTMARK
from running an anti-Bush Website with a name like gwbush.com, they
could turn around and take bushsux.org away from Bush for similar
reasons.)

According to a press release sent out by Exley and RTMARK:
"By reserving the domain names, Exley initially hoped to sell them back
to the Bush camp for a small profit. That changed, however, when he
[Exley] read news articles that discussed Bush's refusal to deny past
cocaine use. His interest in the matter has since escalated into
something of a crusade."

"Bush won't deny he used cocaine," says Exley, "yet hundreds of
thousands of people are serving very long sentences for equivalent or
lesser crimes, including many in Texas, where Bush is governor. Clinton
just got away with perjury while a hundred people are in jail for that
crime. Do we want our children to learn that a crime is only a crime if
you don't have power?'"

Meanwhile, RTMARK seem more concerned by Bush's attempted power-play on
the freedom of the Net. "George W. Bush Jr. apparently thinks small-time
folk should have to register with the government before exercising free
speech on the Internet," says Rita Mae Rakoczi, a lawyer and RTMARK
representative. "The implications of such a precedent could be quite
serious."
