DAVID GROSSMAN
FINALLY GET HIS DUE

DAVE GROSSMAN, the Arkansas psychologist and former US army colonel
profiled in "Headrush" [Adbusters, Spring 1999] has sometimes sounded
like a broken record proselytizing on the harm violent pop-culture
imagery particularly shoot-'em-up video games can do. Finally, he
has been vindicated. Too bad it took 14 dead kids to make it happen.

The recent massacre in Littleton, Colorado, so perfectly fit the
template Grossman warns of right down to the perpetrators' obsession
with morbid video games (the killers rehearsed their crime in a
simulated Littleton before carrying it out) that Grossman seemed
almost to have forecasted it. A huge question mark hung over America;
here, suddenly, was a guy with some answers.

Within a week Grossman had become a minor celebrity in his own right.
President Clinton mentioned him in his Saturday radio address to the
nation. The next day, he appeared on 60 Minutes, playing Doom with Ed
Bradley, blowing limbs off his targets and explaining how efficiently
the game was training him to kill. "People watched that," Grossman says,
"and the mind of a nation just went 'click." Grossman guested on Larry
King Live, The Today Show,

Meet the Press. Networks dispatched crews to his Jonesboro home. On May
2, he testified before a senate subcommittee on youth violence.

It has been a strange turnabout in the life of a man who has heretofore
been shut out of network TV (because, he maintains, his anti-TV-violence
message isn't exactly advertiser-friendly). In the end, the message grew
too potent for the medium to resist.

What's next for Grossman, and his crusade? Much depends on what happens
in Peducah, Kentucky, where a $130 million dollar class action suit
against the video game industry is scheduled to go to trial next year.

"Keep your eye on Peducah," says Grossman. "This is the Lexington and
Concord of the culture war. This is the shot heard around the world.
This is going to be the first step in the revolution that's going to
throw off the oppression of violence and the tyranny of the media
moguls. I really believe it. Once an idea gets loose, you can't rein it
in."
