QUESTION: How much has AmeriCorps cost taxpayers?
How many "volunteer" have been involved in the program?
ANSWER:
As of the end of 1998, some $2.1 billion was spent on the four-year-old
AmeriCorps --- President Clinton's vaunted plan to pay young people to
volunteer.
More than 1000,000 members have served in the ranks of what has been called
the "domestic Peace Corps."
The volunteers serve in government agencies and certain approved
non-profits -- which has included doing work in partisan and ideological
campaigns.
The House Subcommittee on Government Oversight, chaired by Representative
Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), has uncovered many of the activities that have been
funded by the taxpayers.
Summarizing some of the congressional panel's findings late last year was
'Investor's Business Daily':
$$ "Sponsoring a 'Maxine Waters Day of Caring'
in association with the Democratic Los Angeles congresswoman [then]
heading
the Congressional Black Caucus. AmeriCorps also has participated in
rallies
for other congressional Democrats."
$$ "Attending Earth Day rallies."
$$ "Giving $400,000 for the Human Resource Development Institute, a
subsidiary of
the AFL-CIO.
$$ Paying $400,000 for the Washington-based National Multicultural
Institute to
conduct diversity training."
$$ Aiding the Environmental Protection Agency's 'environmental justice
campaign.'"
Little wonder Chairman Hoekstra has called the agency "nothing more than a
huge government bureaucracy seeking new ways to spend taxpayer money."
Actually, that's rather a benevolent definition for an agency established to
recruit fodder
for the central government.
