BBC 2 @ 21:00 hrs
Reputations: Wernher von Braun:
The programme, subtitled "From the Nazi's to NASA" says it all.
Prussian born Dr von Braun was father of the space age, his Saturn
rockets propelled Apollo 11 to the Moon. Yet to quote a French POW,
who faced torture in Germany's underground research tunnels to developing
his V-2 rockets for Hitler, "He was a son-of-a-bitch... He knew what
was happening to those prisoners; He even helped to recruit them."
In spite of his Nazi past, the fact that von Braun secretly offered his
entire rocket research team and the blueprints o the Americans, stood
in his favour - as did his almost messianic zeal to get America into space.
