# Japanese cops raid cult over forgeries. Japanese police yesterday swooped
on the Aum Supreme Truth doomsday cult - responsible for a 1995 sarin gas
attack on Tokyo's subways - raiding 27 properties around Japan. Among the
sites raided were the home of two children of cult leader Shoko Asahara,
who is on trial on 17 charges including masterminding the nerve-gas attack
that killed 12 people and injured thousands. Cops said the raids concerned
suspected forgeries over land purchase in Kawakami, near the mountain city
of Nagano, home to the 1998 Winter Olympics. Gov't ministers are trying to
ban the group. http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/world/1999/0717/wor3.htm
: Does your doomsday cult own much property? Are you influential in social/
political/economic circles? Will you continue whether the world ends or not?
Is a gov't trying to ban your cult? Is your cult trying to ban a gov't? Why?

# JAPAN ILL-PREPARED FOR SUICIDE EPIDEMIC. Japan is facing an epidemic of
suicide, and the government seems to have no clue as to how to confront
the problem. It seems to me that they will need to overcome a cultural
bias against talking about emotions to really deal with the crisis.
http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/DeanFullTextTopics.cfm?ID=14310
: Is the Japanese suicide pandemic a cultural artifact, the result of mind-
control experiments, or merely aliens harvesting humans expeditiously? Why?

# Company Hopes Gene Trawl Will Bring In Big Catch. ROCKVILLE, Md. (Reuters)
When a fisherman goes out to sea, he may have an idea of what kind of fish
he would like to catch but he will usually take whatever turns up in the
net. But when Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGS) computers trawl through the
human genome, they know precisely what they want to find. "We ask first
what disease we want to cure." Many groups are racing to sequence, or map,
the mass of genes & other genetic material that makes up the human genome.
One reason to search is to find causes of diseases & possible new ways to
treat or prevent them. But unlike others, HGS sees no reason even to look
at the small fry. The firm's future is staked on the premise that they can
pick a disease -- say, cancer -- think of a way to fight it -- maybe by
stopping uncontrolled cell growth -- then find a gene that will do that.

: How much money could you make by developing a new disease and its cure at
the same time? Isn't that easier than finding cures for existing diseases?
Wouldn't that help the aliens harvest more humans too? Do they give bonuses?
Which new diseases are entrepreneurial efforts? Are AIDS & ebola blackmail?

# PRAYERS VS. PROTESTS. Tehran (UPI) Iran's religious leaders used prayer
services to blame the U.S. and "Zionist circles" for the recent string of
nationwide protests, and called on the populace to show support for the
gov't. Official sermons in Tehran said defending the Islamic revolution is
"an irrefutable obligation." "All of us who accept the supreme religious
jurisprudence and the leadership should define the limits through under-
standing before the norms are breached, the sanctities transgressed upon
and the very principles of the Islamic revolution are put under question,
all of which would lead to making the enemy jubilant," a prayer leader
said. http://news.excite.com/news/u/990717/00/international-prayers
: Do your deities politically support your self-appointed leaders? Are your
political foes damned to Hades? Is theocracy fun, especially for theocrats?
Would you rather breech norms, transgress sanctities, jubilize enemies???

"The countdown had stalled at T minus 69 seconds when Desiree, the first
female ape to go up in space, winked at me slyly and pouted her thick,
rubbery lips unmistakably--the first of many such advances during what
would prove to be the longest, and most memorable, space voyage of my
career. --Martha Simpson ** http://www.bulwer-lytton.com/lyttony.htm **
