No, Montauk is on the far eastern tip of Long Island and in closer
proximity to Martha's Vineyard than where TWA800 went down, well to the
west...and where this morning they were showing where the beacon was
heard that was presumed to come from JFK Jr's plane...
But the latest news I heard on the radio now has a fisherman claiming to
have seen a plane making an approach to the airport on Martha's Vineyard
from a direction that is commonly used by pilots who have missed it on
their first approach...according to this fisherman, the plane was only
about 20 to 40 feet above the water and 'then disappeared'...he seems to
not have heard a crash, only that the plane seemed to suddenly be
'gone'...
And they say that some wreckage and the sister-in-law's luggage has
washed up on a nearby beach....
Which raises more questions, since they said that JFK's last radio
contact was 20 minutes before he was due to land at Martha's Vineyard...
so if he'd made it, had tried an approach and missed, or couldn't see it
-- it was quite hazy last night, and apparantly it's hard to see the
approach under those conditions -- why didn't he radio for help and
instructions?
