# China Sentences Sect Leader To Death. HONG KONG (Reuters) A Chinese court
has sentenced the leader of a Christian sect to death for swindling fellow
sect members. Liu Jia-guo, 34, leader of the Jusen sect in Hunan province,
was convicted of stealing up to 200,000 yuan ($24,200) collected from sect
members over 5 years. China has convicted 21 other Jusen members over the
past year, sentencing them to jail terms of between two and 20 years. At
least 40 other sect members were sent to labor camps without trial. Liu
became a Protestant in 1988 and founded Jusen in 1993 in Hunan. The sect
now has 20,000 members in 20 provinces; they call for building a "God's
country" and doing away with a "people's country". Following a national
conference, Liu and 70 other sect members were arrested in June 1998 for

# Brain structure abnormalities seen in autism patients. NEW YORK (Reuters)
High-functioning autistic individuals seem to have a specific variation in
the brain that may account for emotional and social learning impairments
associated with autism. Researchers found anomalies around the amygdala,
an almond-sized structure located deep in the brain that plays a role in
emotion and mood. "We found a specific brain area that seems to be quite
different anatomically." But "it's not the amygdala that is different,
it's the pathways in or out that are different." These findings "indicate
that even those people with autism who are really quite (high-functioning)
have brains that are really quite different." Autism is a mental disorder
characterized by extreme withdrawal and an inability to communicate or
