I think Howard Stern is a symptom of postmodernism. When everything
becomes a spectacle, a soundbite, a media event, then subjects collapse,
or in terms of postmodernist jargon--they're de-centered.
Most of us (at least, those of us who are still relatively sane) are still
concerned with a search for truth, but from the Howard Stern
perspective, we're idiots for our insistence that the dots can be
connected to form pictures...and the pictures can still be rationally
grasped by the mind.
The Sternites are operating under the illusion that history has ended. We
are now in a postmodern consumer paradise in which the search for meaning
is no longer an issue. According to this logic, all discourses are
equally valid....and if truth is just a matter of aesthetics or individual
"style," then ethical issues are just a matter of choice... It's an
extreme form of solipsism, but it works in a society that now holds up
consumption and profit-making as its ultimate goal.
An interesting part of Stern's repertoire is his humiliation and
debasement of women. This seems to be a real turn-on with his
followers...I guess it relates to male anxieties...particularly adolescent
white American male anxieties about women in general.
But some social theorists argue that the Amerikan system, with its
emphasis on instant gratification and commodification of every aspect of
cultural life, is sliding in the direction of a pornutopia. After all,
the market is designed to provide us with EVERY kind of gratification...
Just look at the net. Although there are individuals who are accessing
educational/information sites...much of the net offerings are
masturbatory...
