-Caveat Lector- From: Nealz Nuze http://www.boortz.com/nealznuz.htm July 26,1999 STUPID NUCLEAR LAB TRICKS Sandia Nuclear Laboratory officials will soon have to explain to Congress how, 10 months ago, they sold a $9 million surplus supercomputer for $30,000 to a Chinese exporter who specializes in funneling high-tech goodies to Beijing. Sandia officials are now scrambling to buy the computer back from Korber Jiang, offering to pay him $2.5 million. Said one Washington official, "Sandia is in full farcical 'cover-your-a** mode. They are still praying they can get the damn thing back without anyone noticing in Congress--and of course they are anxious Beijing will get hold of it." Leaked classified reports indicate the supercomputer had been modified to include "some of the U.S.'s most leading-edge interconnect and computer technology -- it has an operating system that has been tuned and enhanced by Sandia for a number of important national-security missions." How did the government find out about this? Korber contacted Intel Corp., the maker of the computer, to ask about parts needed to get the machine up and running. Sandia officials sold the computer to Korber in pieces, assuming it would just be used for spare parts and scrapped. They never checked Korber's background since he'd submitted the best bid. What's worse, the system's hard drive apparently was not wiped. U.S. nuclear secrets may have been stored on the drive. It's really quite heartening to know that our country's nuclear secrets are in such responsible hands. And to think I had such a mistrust of government.
