-Caveat Lector- NY TIMES SET TO RELEASE GERTH STORY ON CITIBANK; WILL NOT HAVE FRONT PAGE PLACEMENT After holding back the story since it was filed by reporter Jeff Gerth last Friday, the NEW YORK TIMES on Tuesday is planning to publish a detailed report on how CITIBANK has been slow to cooperate with various federal investigations looking into money transfers from China and other countries. The story involves individuals suspected of passing cash to the Democratic National Committee -- with money from China -- wired through at least one CITIBANK account. But according to publishing sources, the Gerth report will not appear on Page One of the TIMES. Editors bumped Gerth with a story about the last day of Checker Cabs in New York City! "It has been a controversial story... it raised many sensitive issues," a source explained late Monday night, just hours before publication. The DRUDGE REPORT has learned that Gerth was told to "revisit" the original story that he filed. The story that will appear on Tuesday is said to be a "moderation" of Gerth's original report. The efforts of a congressional committee that is currently investigating the cash trail from China appears to have been de-emphasized in the final edit. The Committee on Government Reform has been "stonewalled" by CITIBANK, a committee source said late Monday night. Gerth left out specific details of the bank's lack of cooperation with investigators. Congressional investigators have subpoenaed bank account records of suspected money runners. CITIBANK has balked at providing the records, citing, among other things, a "language barrier" problem with its Hong Kong office. Early on in the investigation, it was discovered that CITIBANK was used for the original "Chung wire" of cash from China. Investigators now want the bank records of Liu Chao Ying, a Chinese aerospace executive and lieutenant colonel in the People's Liberation Army. The DRUDGE REPORT has obtained a letter sent to CITIBANK last week from the committee's chairman Dan Burton -- a letter which outlines the bank's level of cooperation.
