THE TEAPOT DOME DOCUMENTS

Cabinet officials indicted and forced to resign; a Senate inquiry
attracting national attention; special prosecutors appointed to
investigate the charges of political corruption reported in the press;
tens of thousands of dollars in cash handled in little black bags by the
most important men in Washington; charges and countercharges of illegal
surveillance and harassment50 years before Watergate, these were the
ingredients of the scandal called Teapot Dome.

The details of the Teapot Dome scandal have retained their interest with
the passage of time. For instance, Albert B. Fall, secretary of the
interior under President Harding, was convicted of receiving bribes for
the selective leasing of naval oil reserves; but Harry Sinclair and
Edward Doheny, the oilmen who were linked to the bribes in Falls case,
were acquitted at a later trial of paying the bribes. Sinclair, however,
was eventually found guilty of tampering because he had ordered the
entire jury in his bribery case to be put under surveillance by private
detectives. In addition, the Mammoth, Sinclair, and Pan-American oil
companies were found to have been involved in the fraudulent leasing of
naval oil reserves.

The Teapot Dome Documents, covering all of the major aspects of the
scandal, contains testimony, grand jury material, briefs, evidence,
correspondence, hearings, and archival records that are being published
for the first time. This collection provides the documentary material
for an in-depth study of the most flagrant abuse of the political and
financial power of oil companies in American history.
