I'm VERY slowly catching up on posts that backlogged while I was on vacation,
so excuse the tardy response. There's more to the cult of heads than you
suggest, William. For example, the Britons (the Celtic inhabitants of Britain
who eventually retreated to Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany) buried the heads of
heroes at strategic spots like crossroads to protect their cities. The heads
were also believed to have oracular powers, a trait which was common to the
heroes of virtually all Indo-European-speaking peoples and many of their
neighbors.
