-Caveat Lector-
SHOOTING THE MESSENGER
There is something positively unseemly
about the fact that Linda Tripp is the only
central figure in the Monica Lewinsky mess
to face criminal charges.
Needless to say, the timing of Tripp's
indictment in Maryland for illegal
wiretapping is decidedly suspicious. The
grand jury has been hearing evidence for
over a year - but finally chose to act just one
day after Bill Clinton became the only
president in U.S. history to be sanctioned by
a judge for what she called willfully false
statements that were designed to obstruct
justice.
Clinton escaped with his job and poll
numbers intact after Democratic members of
Congress decided that lying under oath isn't
a crime when it's committed by a
Democratic president. Linda Tripp, on the
other hand, after being publicly demonized
by the White House and the Clinton-friendly
media, now faces up to five years in prison
and a $10,000 fine for having uncovered
evidence of the president's misconduct.
Remember that Tripp - who was indicted
despite a guarantee of immunity from
Kenneth Starr - did not begin recording
herconversations with Lewinsky in order to
uncover the president's thong-snapping Oval
Office sexcapades. She meant to provide
evidence that the president of the United
States had tried to cover up the affair and
urged Lewinsky to perjure herself.
It will be interesting to see if state
Prosecutor Stephen Montanarelli, a
Democrat who says he'll try the case
personally, treats Tripp with the relative
leniency that was shown to Democratic
activists John and Alice Martin. In 1996, the
Martins illegally intercepted a cell-phone
call by then-Speaker Newt Gingrich, taped it
and passed it along to a congressman - who
then gave it to The New York Times. After
months of protest by Republicans, the
Martins eventually were indicted on
wiretapping charges, pleaded guilty and
paid a $1,000 fine.
White House aide Bob Weiner, who
contacted a Maryland Democratic group
urging Tripp's prosecution, hailed the
indictment, saying that "her violations of
privacy were an affront to the meaning of
friendship."
Wrong - Bill Clinton's violations of decency
and justice were an affront to the
sensibilities of the American people.
