 Denials of Physical Abuse Disputed
 by Clinton Medical Sources

On Monday White House spokesman Joe Lockhart emphatically denied
that the "abuse" Mrs. Clinton said "scarred" her husband when he
was growing up was physical. Since then both the President and
his wife have stood by Lockhart's statement.

But an account reviewed by Inside Cover unambiguously asserts that
President Clinton and his younger brother Roger were indeed victims
of repeated physical beatings when they were children in Hot
 Springs, Arkansas.

"Both friends and medical sources close to the boys' pediatrician
in Hot Springs recalled that Billy and little Roger were themselves
beaten and brutalized far worse than anyone later admitted. Their
injuries were treated more than once at their doctor's office and
even at the hospital, friends recounted. 'A member of my family
doctored them for some pretty bad stuff -- stitches and all that,'
said a Hot Springs attorney. (Clinton's mother) Virginia staunchly
saw to it that no records remained to embarrass them later....
Each time, Virginia Clinton prevailed on the doctor and nurses
to hold back the shameful secret of the battered children, saying
'she would handle it herself,' as one witness remembered."

The account comes from the exhaustively researched Clinton
biography, Partners in Power, by renowned author Roger Morris,
a onetime aide to Lyndon Johnson and Walter Mondale.

Though Morris's book spent seven weeks on the New York Times best
seller list in 1996, the mainstream press has yet to report this
version of Clinton's childhood trauma, which directly challenges
White House claims that the abuse Mrs. Clinton cited was not
 physical.

Morris's comprehensive tome reveals that police were called to the
President's childhood Hot Springs home on at least two occasions
during the 1950s, when his stepfather was arrested and jailed for
 the family's protection.

Roger Clinton Sr., a heavy drinker, was not particularly discreet
in his outbursts. According to Morris, "He was given to kicking or
slapping Virginia in public or throwing her to the floor of their
bedroom, where he hit her with her own shoe."

Press attention since the First Lady revealed some of the Clinton
family secrets has focused on the emotional conflict between the
 President's mother and grandmother.

But the account in Morris's book may bring a dramatic shift in the
debate about the nature of the abuse suffered by President Clinton
and its impact on his marriage -- and on his presidency.

I'm no psychologist, but I've heard them say it dozens of times:
Those who are physically abused in childhood tend to repeat the
pattern in adulthood unless they get help. Juanita, Kathleen and
the "young woman lawyer in Little Rock", call your respective
 offices.

What else do we have to look forward to? Another phoney war,
and more "wag the dog" as each of the peccadillos unfolds ?
