Newsweek: Lawyer for Texas Funeral-Home Chain Under State Investigation
Says George W. Bush Popped in Meeting and Asked, 'Are Those People Still
Messing With You?'

    NEW YORK, Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Gov. George W. Bush's presidential
campaign denies that Bush discussed with Robert Waltrip, an old Bush friend
and financial supporter, the state's investigation into Waltrip's Service
Corporation International (SCI) funeral-home chain. But Johnnie B. Rogers, a
lobbyist and lawyer for SCI, tells Newsweek a different story: when he and
Waltrip went to Bush's office to complain about the probe, the governor
popped his head in the room where they were meeting and asked, "Hey Bobby, are
those people still messing with you?"

When Waltrip said they were, Rogers recalled, Bush turned to him and said,
"Hey Johnnie B. Are you taking care of him?" "I'm doing my best, Governor,"
Rogers said he replied, according to a report by Investigative Correspondent
Michael Isikoff in the August 16 issue (on newsstands Monday, August 9).
Newsweek reports that Rogers and Waltrip had come to drop a letter at
the governor's office demanding a halt to the investigation. Rogers told
Newsweek that he and Waltrip were ushered in to see Joe Allbaugh, then Bush's
chief of staff and now his presidential campaign manager, when Bush popped his
head in during their meeting. Bush's press secretary Linda Edwards
acknowledges that Bush and Waltrip had a "brief verbal exchange" but said
"they did not discuss the case."
Waltrip is a trustee of the George Bush Presidential Library and SCI
donated more than $100,000 toward its construction, Isikoff reports. Last
March, Waltrip got the former president to speak at a funeral-association
convention and SCI paid the $70,000 honorarium. Waltrip also gave $10,000 to
the younger Bush's 1994 gubernatorial run and SCI's political-action committee
chipped in $35,000 for his 1998 re-election.
