Killer Had Book on Serial Killer
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - The man charged in the decapitation slaying of a
Yosemite National park naturalist was carrying a novel about a serial killer
when he was first questioned, according to court records.
Hotel handyman Cary Stayner, who reportedly told FBI investigators he killed
the naturalist and three female tourists, has pleaded innocent in the killing
of naturalist Joie Ruth Armstrong. No charges have been filed in the case of
Carole Sund, her daughter Juli and family friend Silvina Pelosso.
Stayner was carrying a paperback copy of ``Black Lightning'' in his backpack
when he was questioned on July 22, the day after Armstrong's body was found,
according to the court records. He was arrested two days later, at a nudist
camp.
The 1995 best seller by John Saul describes a series of killings in Seattle,
with images of women being slashed with knives and power saws.
Agents also searched Stayner's vehicle and his room at the Cedar Lodge where
he lived and worked, but their findings have not been made public.
