-Caveat Lector- http://www.tampabayonline.net/news/news101c.htm 8/12/99 -- 11:18 AM Clinton meeting with Jewish leaders at White House today WASHINGTON (AP) - President Clinton was to discuss the Los Angeles Jewish center shootings with a delegation of American Jewish leaders at the White House, a spokesman said. The private, late afternoon meeting today was scheduled before Tuesday's shootings, but hate crimes will be on the agenda, spokesman Barry Toiv said. Toiv did not comment on whether the president believes the woundings of five people at the Jewish center was a hate crime. The suspected gunman, Buford O'Neal Furrow Jr., told the FBI he intended the shootings as ``a wake-up call to America to kill Jews.'' Attorney General Janet Reno said today the ``shootings appear to have been motivated by hate. ``Hate crimes represent an attack not just on individual victims, but also on the victims' communities. They tear at the very fabric of a people's life,'' she said at her weekly briefing for reporters at the Justice Department. Reno renewed the Clinton administration's commitment to stiffer gun control, and then went further. ``I believe we must seriously explore the possibility of requiring the licensing of all handguns,'' she said. ``It is common sense, pure common sense, to ensure that guns are only in the hands of those who know how to safely and lawfully use them and have the capacity and the willingness to do so,'' she said. Toiv would not address Reno's remarks. On Wednesday, Clinton said it is ``deeply disturbing'' to think the shootings were motivated by religious hatred. ``I can only hope that this latest incident will intensify our resolve to make America a safer place, and a place of healing across the lines that divide us,'' Clinton said. Clinton last week reiterated his appeal to Congress to pass a hate crimes bill that would make it easier for the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute such offenses. The Senate approved the measure last month and added it to a still pending spending bill. The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the measure last week. Critics say a federal law is unnecessary since states prosecute hate crimes. http://www.tampabayonline.net/news/news101c.htm Bard Visit me at: The Center for Exposing Corruption in the Federal Government http://www.xld.com/public/center/center.htm Federal Government defined: ....a benefit/subsidy protection racket!
