A new look at Di's woes
>From Liz Smith in New York
`EVERY HUMAN being is a divinity and can only be a divinity if there are
dark aspects in him as well,'' said Hans Werner Henze.
The late Diana, Princess of Wales, was a human being, certainly divine, in
her way, and more than burdened with dark aspects. The latter are to be
fully covered in Sally Bedell Smith's new book ``Diana in Search of Herself:
Portrait of a Troubled Princess.''

For those of you who are interested, Smith's book is juicily excerpted in
not one but two major magazines next week, W and People. To be accurate,
People has an excerpt. W's Julie Belcove interviews Smith and catalogs a lot
of the book's racy stuff in her profile.

Smith's jaundiced take on Diana is that she was a severely emotionally
disturbed young woman: desperately insecure, manipulative, controlling,
self-pitying, a ``borderline personality.'' The writer also concludes that
her 32-day romance with Dodi al-Fayed was hardly the great love of her life.

Well, geez, what else is new? I think Diana's problems were fairly obvious
to anyone with eyes and ears. And as I wrote in the immediate aftermath of
her death, it was her modern, up-front neuroses, her movie-starish need to
share all her pain with her ``fans'' that made her such an irresistible
heroine and media magnet.

How much of her psychic pain was exacerbated by life with Prince Charles and
his cold-blooded family? Quite a bit, I'd venture. How would she have ended
up had she not married Charles?

It would have been a life lived outside the heat and fury of world fame. Ah,
and there's the rub. Diana's ascension to media icon gave her, for a brief
period, a respite from her demons.

Smith insists it wasn't her intention to dig up dirt or to ``rake muck.''

Hmmmmm! I suppose, like Mount Everest, Diana's life is ``just there'' and
open to all climbers.

That's fame in the almost 21st century.

Di's heart said to beat for cardiac specialist
Reuter
LONDON -- Britain's Princess Diana has fallen "desperately" in love with a
36-year-old Muslim heart surgeon and wants him to become her second husband
after heir to the throne Prince Charles, a British newspaper claimed Sunday.
The Sunday Mirror linked Diana, 36, to Hasnat Khan, an unmarried
British-based cardiac specialist whose family lives in Pakistan.

And it quoted a "friend" of the Princess as saying she hoped he would father
a half-sister to her two sons, Princes William and Harry.

"The Princess is desperately in love," the tabloid quoted the friend.

"On the one hand, she wants the world to know. But on the other hand, she is
understandably concerned that her enthusiasm may send him running."

The newspaper said the Princess met Khan just over a year ago -- well before
her divorce from Charles was finalized.

The newspaper said her affections for Khan explained a number of surprising
developments in the Princess's life -- her regular night-time visits to the
Royal Brompton to comfort patients, and trips to Pakistan and Australia.

Some bits from ' Diana - the Secret Years.
simone says that Khan was the true love of Diana's life. thei relationship
began in the Autumn of 95
Diana would often wear a wig and store bought clothes to go out on the town
with Khan who after all would recognise a dark haired woman in anonymous
clothes out with a slightly over weight Asian man"
Diana believed that she could live a normal life as plain Mrs Khan in
Australia or America, she even had friends look at prospective properties in
those countries.
she introduced the boys to Hasnat some months after they had been close.
although her sons were both predictably polite to him, william took a mature
attitude telling her that the relationship was OK with him' if it makes you
happy mummy, but Hasnat was uneasy. As Diana told me, he wasn't ready to
become the step father of two very self possessed adolescents", and
especially not william the heir to the throne."
she however driven by the desire to have a little girl remained optomistic
that things could work out. Diana may have indeed been indulging in wishful
thinking. both before and after her death Hasnat, whilst speaking of the
princess with the warmest respect and affection, has said that no such plans
had been made.
Late one spring evening in 97 journalist from all over the world had tracked
Hasnat down after Diana had visited his relatives in Pakistan. and he had
told Diana he wanted to 'step away'
Diana felt guilty that her public persona was affecting a 'normal'
relationship,
hasnat had an invitation to Diana' funeral due to Paul burrel arranging it.
since burrell is probably the only one with the secretasof dians' heart, and
he isn't telling Burrell must have thought Khana very important person in
dinas'life.
simone believe that Dodi was merely a distraction during the summer of 97
and that Diana' intention was that Khan would see the error of rejecting
her.
Khan was on holiday when Diana died but when he returned he found a birthday
card from Diana and an invitation to her funeral.
this meant that whilst she was holidaying with Dodi, she was remembering
Khans' birthday too.
