Turkish officials said the number of confirmed deaths has passed 3,500 and rescuers are continuing to comb through collapsed buildings and other heavily damaged structures in the region around Istanbul, a city of 12 million people, in the search for those who may still be trapped. More than 16,000 people were reported injured in the quake, which had a magnitude of 7.8. One of Turkey's main naval bases, located on the Sea of Mamara at Golcuk, was extensively damaged and a number of high-ranking officers were reported killed.
