U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond, the nation's longest-serving senator and oldest
congressman, was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after collapsing at a
reception, a top aide said.
Thurmond, 96, was attending a reception at the University of South Carolina
for a federal magistrate judge when he collapsed, Thurmond spokesman John
DeCrosta said.
The South Carolina Republican was conscious when he was taken to Palmetto
Baptist Medical Center in Columbia, said DeCrosta, who had no other details.
A nursing supervisor at the hospital would not release any information about
Thurmond.
Thurmond has been hospitalized briefly several times in recent years,
including for a day in Washington after he became dizzy during a Promise
Keepers rally in October 1997.
That December, while on a trip home to Aiken, Thurmond spent several days in
a military hospital for a respiratory infection and earlier that year he
spent several days at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington recovering from
the flu.
He often boasts of his good health and won favorable reviews as alert and
attentive while he served as the Senate's president pro tem during this
year's hearings into the impeachment of President Clinton.
