-Caveat Lector- HOME DEPOT TO PHASE OUT PRODUCTS FROM ENDANGERED FORESTS ATLANTA, Georgia, August 26, 1999 (ENS) - The Home Depot, the world's largest home improvement retailer, used its 20th anniversary celebration today to announce a policy change on wood sourcing. President and CEO Arthur Blank told Home Depot associates the company will phase out the sale of wood products from old growth forests over the next three years. Environmentalists hailed the decision as a victory for their campaign. Copyright Environment News Service (ENS) 1999 For full text and graphics visit: http://ens.lycos.com/ens/aug99/1999L-08-26-05.html TWO EPA OFFICIALS INDICTED FOR PLANTING FALSE DOCUMENTS Two employees of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were indicted Wednesday on charges of obstruction of justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice and perjury, the Department of Justice announced. Marc Radell of the Region III Office of Regional Counsel in Philadelphia, and Claudia Johnson of the Region V Water Division in Chicago, were each indicted on four felony counts arising from allegations of criminal conduct that surfaced during federal civil cases in Wisconsin. In January 1996, EPA Region V granted three Wisconsin Indian Tribes the authority under federal environmental law to determine the quality of surface waters within their reservations. The State of Wisconsin filed lawsuits in federal district court challenging the EPA’s decisions. The indictments charge that during the course of the litigation, Radell, an attorney, and Johnson created and backdated EPA documents, and then stated in affidavits and during depositions that the documents existed prior to the time that the EPA made its decisions regarding the three tribes. The lawsuits were later dismissed, and the EPA was ordered to pay Wisconsin and other parties about $369,000 in attorney’s fees and costs.
