Maybe it's the recent surveys showing Americans don't care if Bush Jr. used the drug a generation ago? But more probably it's the fact that the press' own double standard has become so blatantly apparent that even they now worry about seeming unfair. Reporters have been slammed lately for not going after President Clinton on the same question -- and the entire U.S. media knows it risks a credibility crisis should the Bush bashing continue. >> I know it's nearly irresistable to travel the well worn path, but what Clinton might or might not have done is pretty close to irrelevant at this point. What George Bush might or might not have done years ago is not important either, but what he has been doing since he has been governor of Texas is another matter. Why is most of the media so silent on "Deadgate"? If Ivins and Press are right, it appears that Dubya can be bought. It is almost certain that he lied in an affidavit sworn before Notary Public Ofelia S. Vanden Bosch, when he was trying to convince the court he should not be a witness in Eliza May's suit against Texas and Service Corporation International (the world's largest funeral chain), including its CEO, Robert L. Waltrip, a very close Bush family friend and staunch contributor to Bush's gubernatorial campaigns. It appears that in spite of Dubya's influence, May's investigation of improper embalming practices (a woman reported that when she went to lay flowers on her son's grave, the family mausoleum was infested with gnats and a foul, maroon-colored liquid was leaking from his crypt) continued, and she fined SCI $450,000. She was immediately fired. Now since Mr. Waltrip has contributed $l00,000 to ex-prez Bush's library, given $45,000 to Dubya's campaigns and loaned his corporate jet on occasion, he probably feels he should not have to pay any more. As Bill Press says, "Only further investigation will tell whether Deadgate is just the case of one more sleazy politician giving special treatment to a fatcat contributor, or of one more elected official lying under oath." Oh well, political business as usual. No wonder the establishment media blew the horn so loud about ancient cocaine use. Much better everybody blather on about that than about what Gov. Bush has been doing for his good friends while serving the good folks of Texas. Prudy DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list.
