It is clearly true from this posting that the Press (Williams included)
frequently let us down. What they do not do is give us the "whole" story.
One gets the sense of a child flicking a flashlight on an off and turning
around slowly as he does so. Perhaps it is not the photographers and
reporters, but the editors, or even the publishers who leave us with the "a
little knowledge is a dangerous thing" syndrome. Anyone wishing to view a
symptom of the problem need only turn on a television set to CNN. He or she
will be treated to the story of the week or the stock reports while a two
liner about something you really would like to know about flashes quickly
across the bottom of the screen. Perhaps when we ask the time, we do not
really want to know how to build a watch, but we might like to know who built
one, if it was a good product, and if wearing it will be harmful to our
health. It is the media that decided we should only know or see the tip of
the iceberg. Getting more is one of the most difficult problems we have
today. Why didn't our photographer do a book about his general? Why if he
tried, would no one publish it? Anything that stopped the war in Vietnam is
a good thing, but there is no reason for anyone to be persecuted for actions
taken in war that are relative to fighting the enemy. Prudy
